Not the NES, it was just as "mature" as its competition. But SNES was less edgy/mature than the Genesis, N64 less so than PSX, and so on.
Don't forget that Nintendo was far more successful in the handheld market and they exclusively marketed to children. Nintendo gave this rep to themselves, it wasn't muh game journo boogeyman who forced it on them.
