I wouldn't say it was an obsession but just an easy to go fantasy setting that wasn't western, like Aladdin, Thief and the Cobbler, or Prince of Persia. Geopolitics and social climate probably killed it. But Japan still does it like Legend of Arslan, Magi the Magic Labyrinth, or Shoukoku no Altair.
What I've actually noticed for years was how Japan did a lot of very tropical or junglely, probably Southeast Asia, sometimes tribal setting but I've never seen it touched on. Things like Chrono Cross or Jade Cocoon for instance

This and games like Dragonseeds are those games about getting and training up monsters that are so disconnected from chasing the Pokemon cash, that I feel they would've existed without it despite coming out at the perfect time.

I would say Jade Cocoon it's pretty similar to Nausica.
There's a dungeon (I think it was the third or fourth one) that looks exactly to the OP image.
