That's kind of the point. The studio didn't want John Carpenter casting an Asian man as the lead character, so he did some changes, and brought in Kurt Russel to play a new lead character, and they'd do it in a subversive way, by making this character, Jack Burton, a boisterous oaf who often bumbles his way into and through action and escapades like an idiot. They manage to actually do it in a very endearing way, as much as you'll laugh at Jack Burton and think "What an asshole." he's also kinda cool and charming.

It's a great action comedy, and Kurt Russel is a big part of why it works so well.
It also has a lot of good Asian culture inspired visuals, bringing to mind Mortal Kombat and Shadow Warrior.
