Sonic Classic Heroes is the latest incarnation, actually. It's Sonic 1 and 2 together plus the party system you see there. And yeah I fucking love it too, I wish there was one for S3K.

Play "chaotix-style" mode with 2 characters sometime, it's surprisingly a lot more fun to play with than Chaotix ever was.

Download Sonic Classic Heroes, a mod of Sonic 2 to have all the levels of Sonic 1+2. You choose between either a team of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles (or 1 or 2 of them if you want), or Espio, Charmy and Vector from Chaotix. When you play you can rotate your group of characters with the A button, doing stuff like switching to tails to fly the team up and switching to Sonic to jump off and insta-shield attack on a boss. It's very well done.

The reason I bring it up: You can ALSO choose to have Chaotix tether mechanics and it's actually loads of fun that way, which surprised me with my dislike of that game. It's MUCH more fun in Sonic 1's and 2's levels.
