For retro I'm not sure, maybe Breath of Fire IV. Even with its problems I still feel its good points put it above other jrpgs.

For non retro games I would say SMT: Nocturne SMT: Strange Journey.

Good answer. Really hoping we get MM2 someday.

Breath of Fire IV's story and plot was pretty good.

Most jrpg plots are pretty hard to take serious if that's what you mean.

Wrong.

Also the psp port of BoFIII is probably worse then the ps1 version. It was censored a bit and has some slowdown.

Marketing and exposure. The odds were with FFVII honestly. It was on the best selling console of that generation, appealed to the growing interest in "edgy" works, and was a pretty good game to boot.

Today though I don't think it deserves that title though honestly. It is a decent game but not THE jrpg. For ps1 I would say BoFIV is the best jrpg on the console, that game has aged amazingly despite being near 20 years old now.

Good system that encourages experimentation and diverse tactics. Sadly it never really sees it's full potential due to the low difficulty.

For retro I felt BoFIV had a great plot. It has a lot of subtle sybolism involving Asian religons such Buddism, Taoism, and Shintoism that really ties into its Asian influence. Throughout the game the player will switch between the main protagonist and antagonist and see how both come to grow and develope their thoughts. The world is interesting, the gameplay is fastpaced, and the soundtrack is extremely unique for a jrpg.

Might as well ask here I guess.

Anything similar to the way rows work on BoF4? Basically you have three characters in front and three in the back and can have anyone moved to the front or back at any time in battle. Had a lot of fun with this but nothing else comes to mind similar to it.

It's good but I feel CT is strong for the sum of its parts. Looking at things individually there are games that are better but because of how good they put everything together is what makes it exceptional.

Still, to me personally I do feel there are better jrpgs out there. One of these I would say is Breath of Fire IV. Battle system, story, art, characters, and world are better, only thing I give CT over it is soundtrack though BoFIV is no slouch either.

Damn, that's brutal. Not even at least something rare and shit but genuinely good.
