What was your first experience playing Doom?
>late 1994 sunday afternoon
>7yr old me, obsessed with Mortal Kombat 2
>don't read gaming magazines, out of the loop about PC games in general
>dad brings home a big box with cool artwork and floppies inside
>"drop your nintendo, anon, I've got something here"
>"nooo dad, not your simulators again"
>(I actually loved playing F117 with him but all I wanted to play at the moment was Mortal Kombat 2)
>"It's a shooter game like contra but it's in first person like you are watching the action with your own eyes, anon"
>"yeah dad, like in your simulators. This is a really stupid idea"
>dad switches on the PC. I don't like it much because "Super Nintendo has cooler games" and I'm always afraid to break it somehow. I am not allowed to switch it on and use it on my own
>Windows 3.1 starts but dad shuts it down to "free the memory"
>starts a blue-windowed shell instead
>I am looking at the game box while the game installs. It says Doom II
>some of my classmates were joking about Doom when the lights went flickering in the class. Never seen the game myself and never knew that there are two of them
>after the setup process the game is launched, first level starts, I see pic related
>"huh, these stairs look cool"
>dad moves around, shoots
>"definitely cool"
>I ask to try myself and for the rest of the session it's just me playing and dad watching me play and giving advice
>we finish the game a couple of weeks later. Keyboard only, frequently getting scared and lost in the levels, save scumming
>It's the best gaming experience in my life, thanks dad.
