You're gonna take those kinda muddy graphics and chiptune and you're gonna like it, because otherwise you'll be missing out on an enjoyable game that helped codify and even introduced a mechanic or two that later games would take advantage of, along with a nice mystery thriller-esque story about a Belmont and his fuckup ninja best friend.

But yeah, really, HoD gave us dash cancelling and also makes divekicking and slidekicking just as effective as whipping. The game isn't hard when it comes to combat, but Juste's zipzoom abilities makes that and seeing how fast you can get through areas fun anyway. IN fact, this game probably more than the other metroidvanias barring maybe SoTN actually puts more emphasis on figuring out what you're supposed to do and where you're supposed to go than probably anything else with a real nice, spooky sense of setting. You won't get multiple weapons or souls or anything since the main player character is a Belmont, but you do get whip attachments and numerous spellbooks that give you up to five different attacks with whatever singular subweapon you have on hand, along with some stuff like rings that alter how base subs work or even floating boots. People bitch about the level design and backtracking, but outside of some places being rather flat and snakey, it really shouldn't be that big a deal since Juste can move so fast and you can crouch in front of particular doors for teleporting around.
