Not all genres have universal appeal which is fine and there are plenty of sports games held in high regard like NHL94(just got a roster update for the playoffs), NBA Street Vol 2 and Tecmo Bowl to name a few.

Of course, certain genres are not for everybody but looking at the metacritic scores it would to be the larger game sites giving this remake high marks like IGN and Destructoid, to put it simply Metacritic and Rotten Tomatos are poison because people do not actually read reviews.

As someone who played it at launch, the Gamecube version and the 3DS version I think the best version depends on each persons tastes, like you could probably get a source port running at 240p and hooked up to a CRT but with a stable 30fps which would provide a vanilla but crispy experience, the neat thing about the PC source ports is you got options to play it the way you want.
