FPGAs are absolutely perfect for recreating digital circuits (like consoles and computers) that operate on precise and predictable parameters, however they suck and struggle to recreate ANALOG circuits in any realistic and believable way because of low logic elements counts not sufficient enough to take in account the constant shift in unpredictable analog circuits. Ironically as it might sound, DSP software on something like an ARM processor does a lot better at emulating analog behavior using complex algorithms.

This illustrates what an FPGA does for better and worse vs software processes, FPGAs RECREATE the process based on virtualizing precise circuit calculations while software emulation just mimics the outcome of that process. This is what a lot of idiots struggle to, or don't want to, understand and why we rather should use "virtualization" for FPGA processes instead of "emulation" since it's a lot more aptly descriptive and would less confuse mouth-breathers desperately trying to convince themselves not to spend $300 and consequently spamming the internet with moronic takes for conformation bias (like our lovely resident sociopath with a frail ego and dicklet/poorfag complex, India-kun).

As for use in recreating analog subtractive synths, FPGAs suck for analog oscillators and analog filters for the reasons stated above, they do however a great/perfect job in recreating specific digital components of older synths like their CPU's and D/A conversions before hitting the analog stage (like the MiSTer does) etc and are what they are also used for currently.

The Super 6, Kyra and Novation FPGA stuff, in comparison to analog synths, sound cold, sterile and almost unmusical to the point of software plugins being more believable, and this is coming from a guy who got a Prophet 10 rev4 3 weeks ago.

TLDR; FPGAs are shit for analog, just still use discrete/IC components or even software as it will still be a lot more cost effective and satisfactory.
