Yes, most graphic resources are compressed, unless they are accessed extremely often, like a player's sprite data.

Yes, the compression scheme is highly game dependent.

That being said, I have severe doubts that anything was "doubly" compressed. The point of compression is to have the compressed object contain as much entropy as possible, and you can't compress randomness much more with subsequent compression passes, unless you have a shit scheme. Also decompression is an expensive operation, and running 2 or more decompress steps might be time prohibitive in many cases.

I don't hack the Genesis, but can offer some help. The data you are looking for is most likely NOT compressed because the data structures are small.

If you start with just a binary blob and a hex editor, you'll never get anywhere (or if you do, it will be excruciatingly time consuming).

You need a debugging emulator for the Genesis. I don't know what's out there, but a good one will allow you to examine and edit memory while the game is running, trace execution, and set break points. With these tools and a little creativity it shouldn't be too hard to find the data you are wanting to get at.

Come back when you've found you, that is if >>3019484

Nethack is great. I suggest you write out the keyboard and extended commands on a piece of paper when you start to play. The biggest hurdle to enjoying the game is just figuring out how to control it. It becomes second nature after a while though.

Just screw around for the first few times you play. You want a game that will mess you up? NetHack is the kind of game that if you kick a wall too many times you'll die, not to mention thousands of other obscure deaths that you will become all too familiar with. After you can start getting 5 or 6 levels in, start taking notes on what you find out about the game; item effects, monsters, dungeon features, equipment, maps, etc. I have a notes file a couple thousand lines long that I refer to all the time when I play. It's the only way I would have ever ascended.

The key to enjoying NetHack to its fullest at first is to not spoil the game. Don't look up anything online about it besides the Guide Book:

Try out everything you can think of. There are in-game hints for the stuff you don't.

As a beginner, play a Dwarven Valkyrie. You start out with a very strong character able to hold lots of stuff, critical when you are just starting out and needing to try new things. Combat is typically simple melee, so you don't need to worry about complicated stuff like spell casting.

Last thing. Have fun hacking. If you die, it's no big deal. Who knows, maybe your badass character's death will help a future ascension along. Anyway, you'll have a better idea of what _not_ to do in the future!

OP here. Went to visit the folks over the weekend. Unlike some of you, I have to drive 350 miles to live in my mom's basement. Internet was down, so couldn't pull my work from github, so big fat stall over the weekend.

Thanks for keeping the thread bumped. No way am I gonna let the project die before it's done. Thank god I'll have weed tonight which makes me a x10 better/faster programmer.
