There were kiosks for it around me that had a screen which showed off a lot of the titles. I got my TurboDuo+TurboExpress late just before the release of the Dreamcast, but I had desired the system based on all the cool games the system had demonstrated in magazines, the great trade show showings, and 4 other friends which had the system at the time. There were definitely more of the other systems around, but around my circle of friends, there were fewer NeoGeo owners at the time since that one was truly out of reach to their potential audience.

That is so difficult to reduce to just 10 favorites. Maybe if it were top 100, I could start naming titles. There's just so much on the system that appeals to me.

I wish I had it, but they were not easy to find for cheap back then. I already had the Express which saved me on a few road trips.

I am looking forward to that system. I wonder if they will change the TurboChip/HuCard slot, since I thought the white portions of the card's plastic is supposed to be exposed to help cool the chips inside. Or do they intend on the card floating outside with the potential to be slapped out while in usage?

The small gear in the middle gets worn down, but there are replacements being sold now for it.

That is just an illusion created by camera tricks. With tight shots on the subject, the few games I kept from my youth can look like a lot especially splayed out this way.

Yeah, I am seeking a new job which could help with keeping up with the rising inflation. I am enjoying using the Mist FPGA for everyday usage but I do have a fondness of the old stuff too.

Is it really going to be $200USD or will the chip shortage and supply line issues cause it to be prohibitively overpriced? I can't even get anyone to mod the systems for RGB for that low of a price, so the Analogue system will be a godsend.

The NEC consoles were pretty popular in my circle of friends. I had one friend which owned a TG-16, two had a TurboDuo (not including myself), another one had the full briefcase PC-Engine setup.

My rationale for having a Duo was a combination of the VHS video they offered for free, all the articles in EGM/Gamefan on the excellent games, and those same 4 friends who had the systems (I got it last amongst them). As for my friends, I don't want to reveal as they may be identified, but in general they got the system for the games which appealed to our tastes.

I also recently got a 3DO just before the pandemic because I had randomly gotten some games for the system at bargain bins in my visit to Book/Hard Off stores over the years.

I saw a few of those games on the shelves once in a while, but I've not given the system a chance. I would like to one day. I did pick up a lot of cheap 3DO games every now and then and this past year I did finally get a system, too bad I never did that with PC-FX.

>>7240634
It is one of my most favorite games on the system. The music is so good (and young looking Godesses), that makes it a viable play, even with the newer Eternal/Complete releases available on PC.

It is exciting news. It is less expensive than finding a person willing to replace the capacitors and RGB modding it. For years, maybe a decade now, game-tech.us refuses to do that job, and no one else wants to even try because of the difficulty. Voutar has other projects to focus on, and no one in the US mountain time zone has the skills/knowledge to perform such an operation, and I've searched. So at $200USD, that is an incredible bargain. It even plays SuperGrafx and Arcade CDs, for a lower price than the SD-System^3! While it is unfair to compare the design to NEC's shell design, for Analogue's "premium" marketing, it is one shaved right corner from looking like a Hyperkin clone console.

>>6994689
The slot looks like it has a slightly taller bump opening too based on the image.

Absolutely. There are some games unique to the platform and even some that play better than the equivalent on those other systems. Its finest games stack up extremely well and sometimes exceed their contemporaries in being the definitive release.

Same here. I had always wanted the TurboGrafx because of all the amazing screenshots of games like Ys I saw in EGM and Gamefan. Some time in 98, I saw a TurboDuo bundle which had a lot of the games I had wanted, all those amazing pack-in games with the Duo, a couple of the Working Designs games, Splatterhouse, Neutopia 1+2, Legendary Axe, Alien Crush, etc. and it even came with a TurboExpress alongside oddly a Power Glove. An amazing bundle for $300USD, but got me started, as there was no region locking on CD-ROM games the junk bins in Japan had so many treasures. I really loved the games, and thought the value was amazing. I still have the VHS ads which sold me on a TurboDuo before I ever had one. I can't imagine any other console which included so many amazing games packed in.

I think the least expensive of the CD-ROM^2 addons is probably the original white one, but that may be due to their age and wear requiring fixes. I believe the issues may be related to the gears and bands in them. Repairs are pretty much necessary for these old parts which have to get replaced. Do note that those will require a system card as well for the addon to work, which also defines which CD-ROM^2 type of game you could play. In the end, the SD-System^3 ODE may be the best physical hardware option so you don't have to put up with the complications of repairs.

I was glad there was no region locking nor copy protections for CD based games. That's why I missed out on so many Hu-card and TurboChip games with the TurboDuo. While I had the Express, I was not much into portables then, and I found the CD games more compelling as I could play to my heart's delight back in the late 90s with games from both US and Japan.

No, please stop making fun of my American education. They told me it was the best. It is always under invasion and I enjoyed the games I have. One day I will make enough tacos to pay for the repair work, but I first have to find someone willing to do so. At my intelligence level, I cannot do soldering work, will probably sniff the fumes.

Back in the day, I always thought of it as an 8-bit system, just overpowered, like a NeoGeo is to the 16-bit systems. I didn't care for its bits as I didn't program for the system, but I did care that it had a lot of games I had fun and fond memories playing.

>>5303423
That would depend on the type of PC-Engine you own. If it supports the SSD3, that may be the best option as it covers the function of the Turbo Everdrive and acts as a CD-ROM ODE. However, if you are picky about inauthentic sound on CD-games or are picky about video clarity over RGB, you will have to perform mods on the SSD3.

>>5304480
>>5306283
>>5306989
I wouldn't call them glaring problems. They did fix a couple issuels, like the capacitors oriented the wrong direction. Also for the sound clipping/overblowing issue, they did add an option to turn down the CD-ROM sound, but that means the PCE sound is louder and not accurate to how CD-ROM games should sound. The video issues are fine if you are using a CRT and/or prefer not using RGB. That said, I do want a SSD3 and its mods but that is really expensive.

>>5308678
They are very nice looking repros but they are very expensive and I wish I can afford them. They are made in limited batches and worth more than the real thing. Like the Analog consoles, the intention being they are a luxury item for those that want a premium experience and will pay top dollar. I really want those games.

That's a shame, since the system has a lot of games I enjoyed on it. I suppose if one does not enjoy fighting games, then the NeoGeo library would be sparse too, but I do enjoy fighters as well so there's much for me to enjoy on that system as well. I have not had the chance to explore the FM Towns nor 3DO games, primarily just emulation of the FM Towns point & click adventure games which I liked, but if they have even more than the PC-Engine, there's a lot of games I'd like to play.

My biggest retro disappointment I guess was Sega, Kid, SNK, Compile, Konami, etc. going defunct in making the games I enjoy. A few survived in some capacity, but nowhere near the output it was beforehand.

I remember the TTi booth. It was a small area to the side of Nintendo's large section and behind the EGM booth. The pamphlet they gave out had the green haired Macross girl on the cover and they also handed out free issues of TurboForce. TTi had a 4x4 screen wall to show off the TurboDuo and I think 6 stations for people to play their games. I remember asking the guy in the big Zonk outfit if it was hot in there. Pictures of the event showed there was also another in a Bonk outfit. It was a modest showing, but a pretty cool booth to visit but it didn't have near as much foot traffic as the EGM booth in front of it, because EGM was loud and pushing their live contest to beat their writer Ken Williams at Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition arcade cabinet to win a T-shirt which got the crowds there while TTi had around 20-or-so people around its booth at maximum. I think they pushed the new Zonk game and another vertical shooter the most there (I think it was a Soldier game). I do feel they didn't deserve to fail.

I don't think there was a (Super/Arcade) CD-ROM2 system that was standalone. Most of the NEC systems had to have the card slot, so you don't need to choose one or the other, when the TurboChip/HuCard readers are part of the main system in order for the CD games to run. That said, I have more CD-ROM games than TurboChip games, because the card slot is not region free whereas the CD-ROM games can be played from US or Japan releases. I like them both, but I really wish to get some more TurboChip games, but they are no longer affordable.

I also think the best look is that white PC-Engine with a white CD-ROM^2 in the briefcase setup. I would go for that if I had money, since for that setup you can get an Arcade Card Pro (not Arcade Card Duo) and play all the games except for the SuperGrafx ones.

The Duos just make it convenient all in one setup that plays everything but out of region Turbochips/HuCards, SuperGrafx games, and Arcade CDs (but it can play the Arcade CDs if I can afford an Arcade Card Duo plus Kisado adapter, which will run me about $270USD total). Be aware that most of the early Duos (black ones) have capacitor issues, which I am currently suffering with. The Duo-R and Duo-RX were later releases so they may have chosen better capacitors.

The true plays it all setup is a SuperGrafx + Kisado Adapter + Super CD-ROM^2 system + Arcade Card Duo setup but that is really, really costly but the SuperGrafx with a Super CD-ROM^2 system on its back is a kind of ugly setup. However tacky I found the SuperGrafx with its fake plastic rivets design, I do believe it is a beautiful system when you own one in person like the original Xbox.

At this time I am reliant on Mednafen. Once I get my Duo fixed, I will have to buy some good CD-R discs.

Aside from the intro differences between PCE and PSP in voice actor and translation to English, are there really any differences between the two games? What does the Wii version of the game offer that the other two does not have? If I go with the Wii version, does it work on a Wii-U (I have neither system, and I have been wanting a Wii-U for some time)?

I am looking for some trusted modders to do a recap job (and RGB mods). Everyone's busy with other projects so I am SOL with dying PC-Engine consoles. I cannot do it myself due to shaky hands, and lack of tools/expertise. I was told to try anyway even with my condition, but these will be my first boards to practice on and I just cannot risk them and I'd rather not have the risk of destroying them due to my inexperience and lack of knowledge.

Where? I could afford that. The places around me ask way more around $70-80USD. Amazon has it for over $100USD. Looking on eBay, the ones selling for that price are for parts as-is defective units, and that's not factoring in shipping costs. I don't have the money to take a trip to Japan, and don't foresee going back anytime in the future, for this mythical $30USD for the system. Last PCE systems I saw from Japanon's thread are also over 9900 JPY which also will total over $100USD. It will take some time for me to save up for the $80 but point is that the system has gotten pretty difficult for me to play on and I'm sad as it is one of my favorites.

>>4104885
I just chose an option for the poster for various output jacks that were not RF. The dbGrafxBooster TTP does seem pretty good and I would want one if I had a system that has those back pins and the money.
https://youtu.be/JZ1xWuKdiFc

>>4105459
The card games are region locked from US TurboChips and Japanese HuCards as the pins are routed differently as described by >>4105510 earlier. For card games, the only exception is the SuperGrafx which has its own 7 games, but is backwards compatible with all PC-Engine games, other than those 7 all PC-Engines will play every card game.

The CD-ROM games are not region locked, but there are tiers of the type of CD-ROM game from regular CD-ROM^2, to Super CD-ROM, all the way up to Arcade CD-ROM. Every CD-ROM setup is backwards compatible with the less demanding ones.

Lots of games on the system are under $100USD each. Most of the expensive games are the late releases like Magical Chase and Soldier Blade (but both are amazing shooting games). There are a lot more shooting games on CD that go for over $100USD as well now.

The standard controller is good enough for me. Unless you really want to play Forgotten Worlds or Street Fighter 2 with enough buttons, the standard 2 button pads work well for most games.

I think it is pretty good, home to many of my favorites.

In the US, it was rebranded as the TurboGrafx-16 and initially it was sold in big market cities before national rollout. Eventually NEC consolidated it all to TTI and released the TurboDuo. I clearly remember seeing the TurboGrafx-16 in Toys 'R US. Like the SNES and Saturn, the games are way cheaper from Japan than US version because like those two systems, it was popular in Japan (I even remember it being more popular than the original Famicom at one point) and there's lots of titles available for the system. Just know that the HuCards (JP) and Turbochips (US) will need a converter to play on the other region's system.

That is really difficult since Hudson reprogrammed most games. Similar to how Sega got all those Capcom arcade games like Forgotten Worlds, Chiki Chiki Boys, Strider, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Mercs, etc. on the Genesis by reprogramming the games themselves, just like how Hudson reprogrammed Afterburner, Power Drift, Fantasy Zone, Outrun, etc. for the PC-Engine. Hudson alone practically single handedly supported the console and were damn good at it.

So no Hudson nor Konami. I will go with Naxat Soft's Nexzr. I miss that game, wish I never traded it away.

Who do you recommend to recap a Duo? How much are their services?

I had it recapped and the sound still died on me a few weeks ago after a good year of born again fun.

It is like my youth's beloved memories are on life support and I will have to make the hard decision to pull the plug soon. A replacement is just too expensive, and I fear a recapping may be too.

I sent mine in to get a RGB mod and capacitors replaced. Sound died on my Duo again 2 weeks ago. The fix only lasted me a year. Alas, it my be time I have to put the Duo from my youth to rest. I cannot recommend the heartbreak, the games are great, but it is just costly to maintain the system.

I hear the original Xbox needs some sort of capacitor change too, and I have two of those. It is not easy for me to play games anymore.
