I always saw it as the Reptites being in no danger of losing until Lavos' fall cut the conflict short and the humans only perservering due to warmblooded luck, but come to think of it, I think you can see it that way since Azala is clearly getting more desperate as you storm the stronghold. The Japanese line certainly can be interpreted that Azala was being deliberate, and then Azala says a few cryptic last words before Lavos hits. Azala's kind of an idiot if that's true, because the Reptite ending suggests they would've been fine in the long run had Lavos not fallen.
