Yeah, the station I went to had a gatekeeper too, but it was a PBS station so I was able to get in as a volunteer (I'd done it previously). And yeah, contacting the engineer is the way to go.

If you're in America, don't use SCART cables. There's no reason for it.
Apparently these people make good (and expensive) cables if you're too pussy to use other means to get RGB out.
