So who wants to be the one to tell all the journos in that room that in just a couple of years Mikami is going to shit all over the PS2 he's currently praising the tech of?

They just didn't have enough money to throw at Mikami and his staff personally. The "philosophy" part being the highlight is such bullshit.

Money. A big fat check signed Nintendo that probably came with a nice bonus for him.

He went to Nintendo because Nintendo paid a big fat check for "exclusivity". After the disaster that was third party support on N64, Nintendo was throwing money as damage control.
As an exec Mikami probably got a fat pay bonus out of the deal. He was throwing shit at Sony *then*, but don't forget that he was defending his series and trying to get people to come back to Nintendo. It didn't work.

And then Capcom regretted it, did some quick and cheap re-releases to be done with the contract. Funny how they weren't talking shit about Sony anymore now.

Why did Mikami want Resident Evil to be a GameCube exclusive?

>Another reminder is that Mikami kept trying to sabotage RE since the very first game, shoehorning comedy stuff in it. I don't know if it's autism or he had a beef with Fujiwara. Probably the former given Mikami's track.

That's ridiculous. That was just a pre-production idea that never left the concept stage. It's normal for a game to throw tons of ideas during the research phase.

With that said the sabotaging is true but it didn't happen until picrel, he probably got a nice bonus out of this... or maybe they really thought RE was strong enough to be a system seller, they got a harsh wake up call from that

It's what a big check signed by Nintendo can do to a series

The truth is this was really the very start of the whole "exclusivity deals" shenanigans, so publishers hadn't ironed out the quirks yet.
People from that era like to talk about "exclusives" in full revisionism mode for pre-6th gen, but exclusivity deals the way 6th and 7th gens had weren't a thing before.

Nintendo probably threw a shit ton of money at them since they were desperate for 3rd party support after the N64 debacle

and then Capcom took the money, did the bare minimum, and went back to other consoles anyway

>Even if REmake were on PS2 instead, sales still would've been lower compared to the PS1 titles.

Silent Hill 2 almost sold as much on PS2 within a month as what REmake did on GC in its lifetime

There were still a lot of AITD/RE clones and survival horror during that era, but most of them were all on PS2.

Yes it's still very far from the 5 million sales of RE1 and 2 on PS1, but they still had an audiance.
The time when people REALLY got tired of survival horror was in the next generation.

Yeah I was just thinking about that. It's funny how his complains about RE3/CV all comes down to the exclusivity deal with Sony, and then what does he do just after that? Close a similar deal with Nintendo, so the same thing but worse.

Had RE0 been released on Nintendo 64 in 2000 (which was the original plan, before the GameCube and REmake released) , I genuinely believe it would have sold more units than the final game did on GameCube.

Note only because more people had a Nintendo 64 in 2000 (about 30 millions) than any GameCube ever sold (21 millions), but more importantly in 2000 survival horror was at its prime. Silent Hill, Dino Crisis, Resident Evil 3 had all released in 1999. There were also successful derivatives like Parasite Eve II.

However, by the time the GameCube came out, players and reviewers alike were starting to get sick of the AITD/RE style of survival horror, saying pre-rendered backgrounds and tank controls are a thing of the past.

The HD Remaster also outsold the original RE0 on GC almost 2 to 1, although that doesn't include sales data from the Wii version, it pretty much confirms the game came out at the wrong time and on the wrong platform.
I'm sure on N64 RE0 could have sold around 2 million copies.
