As a player, given a choice between hardware and emulation, always hardware. 99% of the time it doesn't matter though, so I go with emulation because it's much more available.

As a hacker, emulator all the way. Makes hacking much easier.

Boring realistic answer; both.

Video games from now then are related but clearly different. This board is indirect evidence of that. You see hyperbole like "games have died" get tossed around, and while this isn't true, modern games' resemblance to their forerunners is often skin deep in regards to why older generations valued the originals. (see the Conker thread for an example)

Discuss.

I think the largest driving factor for the direction of gaming in the past 15 years has been the Internet for direct and indirect reasons. Because of the Internet, a wider audience can be reached, and thus game design has been redefined to conform to that; simply put, it's the best business strategy to appeal to as many players as possible. Furthermore the business model has changed from standalone releases to periodic updates and nickel-and-dime DLC. Lastly the inability for copyright and patent law to keep up with the Internet age results in stale IP. The result is the simplifications and homogenization of major games, reboots upon sequels, and flattering the player in engineered ways to keep them playing for as long as possible for Samus know's what ever reason.
