>"I thought the Saturn was a mistake as far as hardware was concerned. The games were obviously terrific, but the hardware just wasn't there."

What would've happened if Sega of America were allowed to make the Saturn?

Could have Saturn be saved if sega realised something akin to roboblast 2? Could saturn even run it?

-$399 vs $299 Playstation
-Significantly worse than Playstation at 3D
-Slightly better than Playstation at 2D (requires Expansion RAM to become significantly better at 2D)
-Worse software-driven video playback than Playstation which uses MJPEG hardware decompression (Saturn requires video card add-on to become better at playback)
-Sound chip isn't hardware capable of audio decompression, resulting in lower quality PCM sound effects (Playstation has built-in ADPCM decompression)
-Has difficulty with rendering transparencies in many situations (no problem for Playstation in any situation, and it also supports additive blending)
-Bigger and bulkier than the slimmer and smaller Playstation
-Poorly designed battery-backed up save memory (Playstation uses flash memory which has no time limit on save expiry)
-Extremely hard for developers to program (Playstation was very easy)

Seriously, what the fuck were Sega thinking? Did they honestly think that consumers would see their console as a reasonable value proposition? They literally did everything wrong and Sony did everything right.

It's a goddamn blessing that at least the Saturn had quite a lot of good games but the hardware was A1 trash.

Is it worth getting a Sega Saturn if you're not too fond of RPGs? I sorta need to decide if I should get one or not before the SaturnPSU campaign ends, since that would be the only sensible way for me to connect a Japanese unit to 230v.

I bought a JP Sega Saturn but it doesn't come with any cables, Now what I am wondering is: Could I use an American Nema cable or do I have to get one of those Japanese cables that look very similar? I have a voltage converter that converts to European current.

Just got Pseudo installed on my Saturn & I've got 8 discs. Can someone do me up a list of worthwhile games? Radiant Silvergun and SF Alpha 3 both look great, but what else should I be looking into?

What are some weird or wacky saturn games? Me and some friends are interested in playing some weird ones, and we know the saturn had weird exclusives

So far we have

Virtua Photo Studio
Yakyuken Special
Gal Panic (thought this one would actually have anime tiddies since it was adult rated)

I'll delete this afterwards.

Does anybody know, or remember the name of some sega saturn disc that only had housing and floor layouts? It was released by a real estate company in japan, and from what I remember reading there was probably less than 50 copies.

i remember reading about this last year, but as of right now I can't find information about it, or even where I read it.

Anybody have a name, or a link? Is there even an iso online?

So, today is allegedly the 20th anniversary of the frankly rather disasterous US launch of the Sega Saturn.
Let's have a Saturn General Thread.
What model/revision do you have?
What's your favorite non-import game?
What's your favorite import?
Basically chat about anything Saturn related

nah I dont do swapping, and it looks like you need to swap in order to install the firmware

are modchips still the go to for saturn?

If they aren't, sorry for asking.

I remember vrmodfag said he sold chipped sega saturns, and I wanted to know how much.

Just bought this. What are some good games for me to play on it?

I am going to run CD-R games because Saturn Game prices are bullshit.

I don't mind imports so long as extensive Japanese knowledge required to play them isn't extense.

Didn't know where else to turn /vr/

Whenever I burn a Saturn game with music tracks I get no music. Battle Garegga, Guardian Heroes, the voice tracks in Radiant Silvergun, all gone

Using Alcohol 120% to burn the .mds and .mdf, mounting the cue, using verbatims, 4x speed

I feel like I've done everything I can, I've burned dozens of coasters, what am I fucking up?

Why was the Sega Saturn hardware such an all-round disaster? It's like they couldn't fuck up more if they tried. Thank goodness the games are so amazing but the hardware itself must have bitterly disappointed some people.

This isn't a console war thread, but a hardware discussion thread. In my mind there is absolutely no doubt that the Sega Saturn is a worthwhile system because the games (when imports are included) are just that good.

>Can only match the original Playstation in 3D polygon rendering when at 100% system utilization (when SH1+SH2+VDP1+VDP2 are in perfect sync).
>Worse fill rate than the original Playstation full stop
>No built in MPEG decompression (FMVs look much worse) unlike the original Playstation
>A built in memory card that relies on watch batteries to function (which wipe game saves when dead)
>Transparencies don't work properly because of a pixel overdraw bug inherent in the rendering hardware

And on top of that
>More expensive than the Playstation
>MUCH harder to develop games for

It was rough being a Saturn owner. Very rough. Once again, at least the games delivered a lot of satisfaction.

The western styled controller was eventually replaced by the japanese one arguably best pad ever made for 2D games.
