I'm playing the Japanese Exile: Wicked Phenomenon right now. Holy moly it suuuuucks.

This is like every bad Telenet cliche that posts like >>2743702 like to joke about.

Bland level design. Ugly sprites. But the glitches and bugs kill me. Sometimes the game freezes before loading a cutscene, forcing you to manually power off the system and restart. Sometimes text box artifacts remain onscreen after conversations.

Sometimes you hit enemies, sometimes you don't. Sometimes enemies hit the space above you and hurt you. Sometimes you hit the space above enemies and you get hurt.

Sometimes you freeze in place. Sometimes you freeze in place after changing characters. You freeze in place when you kill a boss, but if you overlap the boss during their death animation, they still hurt (and possibly kill) you.

Rumi's daggers hit whenever they feel like it. Fakil's magic attacks must be anti-attack magic because they actively avoid enemies. The level cap is 16 and you will hit it before the final dungeon. Mercifully this means standing still and mashing the attack button kills all the bosses before they usually have a chance to hurt you.

For some reason it takes up multiple slots of save data on your RAM (so it seems to me). What a joke. The lack of translated item names makes it difficult but I guess i just tank more damage.

This game is a tremendous pile of shit. Its only two saving graces are its good music and nice-looking cinemas (mostly nice, since the artist who draws Sadler seems to think that an eye wraps around half the head).

I can only imagine with bemusement how pissed off people must be to play the harder WD release (or pay for it!!!), like adding insult to injury.

In English, there are few.

Of what I played, Ys I&II is the best.

Ys III
Ys IV has an English fan translation patch

Xak III: The Eternal Recurrence also has a fan translation patch. I like the quick-paced nature of Xak I&II (also on the PC-Engine but not translated), but this might be worth checking out because the translation is fairly well-done.

Exile - enjoyable, and I'd recommend it for at least a playthrough, but the game is a little too short and won't blow you away. There's also a Genesis version that isn't too bad, though it doesn't have all the content of the PCE-CD release.

Exile Wicked Phenomenon - honestly, don't bother. This game is very mediocre and the story is pretty lousy. About the only good thing is this piece of art used to promote the game. There - I saved you money!

Cosmic Fantasy 2 - never played it, but from the videos it looks like a fairly standard JRPG.

Startling Odyssey 2 - same as above, except this is a fan-translated version. Extremely rough - I doubt anyone did more than google-translate the text because it is so garbled as to be comical.

Dungeon Explorer 2 - light on plot, but the game is excellent
