Breath of the Wild is very good
If the mission statement (as described) was to rediscover and explore older game design philosophies then it absolutely succeeds. Very little handholding, your ability to traverse the world being your greatest asset, your character progression being linked to your literal knowledge of how the world fits together and how you can use different mechanics to overcome challenges in a myriad of ways.
Of all games I've ever played it shares a lot more in common with Morrowind than any Zelda game.
Definitely not without it's flaws, some of which are pretty glaring, but considering how lame and uninspired Skyward Sword was, it's pretty impressive that they went down the list of series trappings and discarded most of them, and the vast majority of the ones discarded aren't missed.

If it you compare it to other open world games, it wipes the floor with the biggest of them (specifically Skyrim). BotW almost never loses it's ability to surprise you, and even after dozens of hours you'll still be discovering little ways the games mechanics interact with eachother, little things in the world that tell a story, elements that you would only encounter if you stumbled upon them organically. Like for example, I had beaten the game twice before I ever found the horse god - maybe not mind blowing, but I had no idea it existed before I stumbled upon it and those little moments are what make BotW great.

If someone genuinely doesn't like BotW usually they have a pretty good reason, and I'm not gonna try to change anybody's mind if it's made up. But I do think everyone should try to give it a chance (the WiiU version specifically is super easy to emulate) because it's super rare that an established franchise reinvents itself so radically and so successfully (if sales and critical acclaim are anything to go by)

Sounds like you should consider spending less time worshiping shelves of plastic and more time in the company of the people you love, while you still can.
