This. As a kid, the Mortal Kombat movie was my favorite, but upon subsequent rewatches, while I still have fond memories of it, I don't find it myself enjoying it that much anymore, while the SMB one gets better and better with each rewatch.

Neither Sega or Nintendo did these movies, they just licensed their IPs.
SMB The Movie has a lot of good stuff going for it, but ultimately its hellish production took a toll on consistency, still a great cast and setting. Gotta love the cyberpunk dino-fied mushroom kingdom. It's a movie I like more and more the more I watch it.

I did, remember watching it before going to school in the morning, very comfy memories.
As a kid, I preferred the cartoon parts of course, it didn't ruin the games at all for me, on the contrary it was very cool to see stuff from the games on a cartoon. The interactions between King Koopa and his koopalings were hilarious, and they included many sound effects from the games (like the jump sound).
Nowadays, I prefer to watch the live action sequences with based Lou Albano.
Also I know I'm mixing up seasons since the one with the koopalings was the SMB3 cartoon, which I believe didn't have live action sequences. But still, the cartoon episodes that encompassed SMB1, 2 and 3 were all pretty nice IMO, at least from what you'd expect from a BIC cartoon show.
The SMW cartoon was sadly a disappointment IIRC.

I went to see the SMB movie to the theatre in 1993 as well. I didn't hate it, but it was very weird. I didn't know what to make of it. I enjoyed it a lot more as an adult though, I really like the fucked up dystopian Mushroom Kingdom and Hopper as King Koopa. I re-watched the movie recently and enjoyed it unironically.

The Super Mario Bros. movie is also low-key kino.
SFII is also not that bad, especially because of Bison.

Only because we gave up on trying to get rid of princess dickleaf, but hes just to mentally ill to care, so we embraced herm .... it was the only way, nobody makes any special mention of it anymore, might aswell be anonymous. Gramps on the other hand, well what havent we said about him. Hes just too similar to us. Hes a /vr/ guy, but tripfags are cancer. Its a double edged sword.

I like that the movie is like in a twilight zone between what you say, and early 90s wackiness.
Also I really like the cast, as a kid I hated that King Koopa wasn't actually a dinoturtle the whole movie, but having fucking Dennis Hopper fresh from the set of Blue Velvet doing King Koopa is perfect.
Hoskins and Leguizamo also have great chemistry together, even with all the shit they went through in the set. If anything, maybe all that shit made their chemistry even stronger.

Back then I didn't even notice he didn't have a face. You kind of just imagine it being there.
Like you see his face in codec calls so it just kind exists for you.

The aesthetics, mood/atmosphere really were amazing back then. I sold my used copy for 70 dollars back then because a kid was so desperate to play it but his parents wouldnt buy it for him (mature rating)
