People say nightmare is easier than hard because monster AI becomes predictable. They immediately shoot at you when they see you, so, provided you're strafing, no monster will ever close the gap on you. I've yet to do any nightmare playthroughs to confirm this, though. My impression is, you already have to be good at the game and familiar with the levels for this to apply.
