I've only played the GBA port a decade ago and kind of hated it, but reading through this thread and seeing all the love it's getting has given me a new appreciation for the game, because I realized a lot of the reasons being posted are stuff I love in games, too. I just wish a lot of the gameplay mechanics were implemented better. I've never had a reason to be interested in or play the Romancing Salsa games, but now I do.
Thanks, anons.

it's an acquired taste and I can see why someone wouldn't like it, but to me it just screams fantasy

FF II or "What if Final Fantasy actually took seriously its characters". My favourite entry of the whole installment. I must say i only played the GBA remake, which looks fantastic and solved some of the original issues.

The plot in II wasn't any different from the rest, Every Final Fantasy consist in facing an evil power behind an evil empire. But the tone of the game wasn't as juvenile as the average FF. Characters weren't overpowered warriors/kings with some deep trauma, but resistance soldiers than seek to free their land. For a good chunk of the game, you don't feel like the menace are dragons or wizards, but armed forces and human inventions. People sacrificing their lives won't resurrect in the next chapter. The way the plot is developed, through missions rather than plot twist takes you closer with the events envolved in the plot.

I think it was too mature for its time. And given the direction future protagonists will lead in the franchise, maybe a rarity or exception.

II. Yes, even the NES version. It was the game that defined the franchise. I was a tech demo in comparison--bare bones story, faceless characters. In II they die left and right. The cold opening is classic. Keywords made the dialogue a bit more interactive. Really nice spell list, and you're free to develop the party however you like. It's tightly crafted and fully realized.

The story feels like a scattered, disconnected patchwork; much like the game maps bunch of separate environments that only interact through plot scenes that I don't influence.

I enjoy some of the characters, and the story has its moments. Mechanically, the game play doesn't really stand out or give me much time and space to experiment with character customization.

I like the game, but I haven't played it in more than a decade. It's getting into the territory that keeps me away from FF7 and beyond, and other games in the series are more to my taste.

I'm pretty sure it still works, necessary or not, but I'm not sure if that version fixed the evasion penalty glitch from the GBA version or not.

I support this for FF1. FF1 is a really rudimentary game and there's no reason to play the original when the versions with faster leveling exist.

FFII can go either way. I prefer the original version but I can see why some people like the PSP/GBA ones. It depends how much you like the leveling system in the game. I think it's great so that may bias me.

FF3 both are worth playing. They're very different games.

I like Pat and Ian but their are tons of hard offs in Japan a lot of them you wouldn't even know about unless you were a local or knew someone from these areas and they told you cause they're hard to find sometimes.
You would be surprised.

I'd say it's a tie between FFII and FFVI.

FFII has my favorite cast, story and artwork, I also love the combat system, as much as it's messy and not really well thought out for most things.
I like how the story is simple yet endearing, a cast that has a lot of charm and a great story of a bunch of heroic rebels fighting against a powerful empire led by a charismatic and capable leader.
I also really like the more tragic setting, it's really one of the most "serious" FF for most things and it was also the first one to introduce a lot of conventions of the series like Bombs, Dragoons, Chocobos, the Ultima spell and so on.

FFVI has a great cast, my favorite score and a great steampunkish setting which is really one of my favorites in its kind.
It's a bit too easy and some parts might be a little too cheesy even for me, but it's probably my favorite SFC FF and one of my top favorites, though FFII could win by a small margin.
