Good choice. There's lots of other comfy locations too, like Crescent Isle.

Shenmue is the obvious one given its basicaly 80's Japan life simulator
Densha De Go! you can LARP as a Japanese conductor and appreciate comfy Japanese scenery.
I guess the original Yakuzas are now considered /vr/ so those of course.
The non-localized version of the River City Ransom series (Nekketsu Kunio Kun), especially Shodai Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun since that's a more open-ended action RPG than just a straight beat-em up.

That actually sounds like the kind of inane shit that only I would like, which is probably why Shenmue resonates so hard with me even playing it nowadays despite me being a wee lad when it came out.
I like the idea of playing an action hero but not just experiencing the glamorous parts, if i'm not experiencing the full package then how could I self-insert at the protagonist? That's why Shenmue immediately hooked me and I played through both games within a week.

Coming to post this game. Didn't know a whole lot about the game before playing it. Rented it one Friday after I got my DC and holy shit everything about the game blew me away. I spend half of the first day just wandering around the house interacting with everything, opening drawers, taking pictures off walls, then exploring every nook of the neighborhood. Spent so much time just exploring and looking at shit that I didn't even make it out of Sakuragoroka the first day, and when the street lights came on at 7pm, oh man...
