Probably because most of the people that used that style were hacks like Leinfeld and whatnot and made the style look ugly as hell. Plus the 90s was the era when writers got high off cocaine and took themselves too seriously or were arguing over autism, look at the Spider-Man Clone Wars Saga for instance. It was less the style that was at fault and more the lack thereof of substance.
