How about inside the console? More roomy than a SCART.
Also anything you house in a SCART could be housed in a d-sub and be cheaper that way.
SCART is only good if you live in a country where it's common.

If you do use a buffer chip you can easily substitute 74LS04 by just connecting to pin 1, bridging 2 and 3, and putting the resistor on 4 (the output). I just wouldn't trust an IC with open collector outputs like the 74LS07 which might be screwed up by the termination on video signals.
