The NES has so many excellent games that even a top 50 is difficult to determine, but Super C is likely in there. While I prefer the top-down alternative stages of Super C over the corridor sections of the original, but I still like the first Contra more than Super C. Still amazing how it feel so much better than the arcade versions in terms of control smoothness. Konami were masters of old 8-bit and earlier processors.

I like it too for the homing spread shot, but I prefer the NES titles more. I only had the NES at the time, so I had to borrow the GameBoy from others back then but still enjoyed it. Now it is one of the few regular GB games I revisit on the Super Gameboy2.

Even everyday objects have a spirit. It allows for a good variation of yokai enemies for 2 players to handle.

I am with you. I think the Contra games flow a lot better. The player movement is so much smoother and you can read the attacks from enemies so much better since they have defined singular actions.

Of the two, I think I know the SNES one better. They both play great, I cannot decide.

First game I think of with "home port superior to the arcade release". Fond memories of playing them alongside my cousins. A fun series that controls great with amazing action.

I remembered playing a game in the arcade that was run & gun where you were on Dolphins. It was 2 player simultaneous play, one as a guy the other a girl. I thought it was fun but tough, maybe because I was not familiar with it, but sadly the arcade around me replaced it with Guilty Gear probably because aside from myself and my cousin, no one played that machine. I don't know if it ever got any home conversions.

Yes. I think I like the "F" weapon most, paired with a high damage weapon like "C" or "L". I feel "S" and "H" becomes almost useless on that difficulty. On the last boss, you can time your shot to specifically damage the red orbs for powerups while the brain just floats around, and stock up on the screen-clearing bombs which will be needed for the additional phase not on other difficulties. For the boss pictured, you should run first and only attack when you can, remember you can save time by dropping just past its head and continue in your circular path.

I think the Contra games are pretty good.

They each offer something to me. The original two were just amazing and better than the arcade releases. The SNES one controls the best to me. The Genesis one has varying weapons with different characters and multiple paths. At this time, I have played the Nintendo ones to death, and have rarely played the Genesis one I will go with that only because it still feels a bit new to me.

I like Operation C, but I feel the horizontal distance covered by the jump is a bit short to me.

The flamethrower works great for me since it does pass through some objects to damage them. I tend to pair it with a high damage weapon like the L or C, sometimes H for homing laziness. While it is low damage, I find the F weapon very versatile and cary it through from that stage through the end.

For $25, the Sega Ages 2500 games were meant as bargain bin games. I like that the Treasure Box one includes the Game Gear games, options to switch between English and Japanese, and even options for progressive scan.

The earlier ones were partnerships with D3's budget line of Simple 2000/3000 line of games and remade the games awfully with interns. However as they kept going, someone came to their senses and just opted to port the originals as best as they can and offered options.

I have never played any Monster World games. The 4th one always gets my interest with the main character. I got the M2 port on Xbox 360 called SVC Monster World. Never had the incentive to give it a go since the game series was avoided in my past.

I too find it easy without the code too so long as I am playing on my own. However, I think it may be a challenge to sync up with another player sometimes where you have no synergy with which can change some enemy shots/attacks as they may not be aimed at you and change the dynamics you're used to. Also the screen may be different like the vertical stages where the players advance the death pit line up for viewable area. Still, it is great fun when my cousins joined in.

I have no clue how to pick favorites. A lot of the genre I played I loved. Good times for me spent with my cousins on this genre, just because I have no friends.

"Now that you have a Super Nintendo, give your old games to your cousin" ... and I never saw the original NES Contra again. Damn game is like $40USD in my area just cart only, which is a whole day's work for me, assuming I don't have food, housing, maintenance, etc. to pay for. It's so common, every kid had it, but so hard to have now.

That's an awesome idea, I should do that, but the downstairs neighbor would not appreciate.
