If you look at the spec sheets for some professional CRTs which are typically used for low resolution gaming they often list impressive capabilities in resolution

I'm going to guess 25 of those lines are used for blanking. So you could run 800x600i. I used to do this one one of my old Trinitrons and used 720/1080p video as source material. It looked really nice.
