The same vibe as in, desolation, devastation, and decline? Or as in, vampire superheroes? The latter are not my thing, but for the former look no further than the likes of Demon's Crest. The whole demon-world series (Ghosts 'n Goblins and its sequels and the Gargoyle's Quest games) thrive on brutal desolation of the demonic world despite being superficially cartoony. The whole concept of the demon-town (makaimura - the original name of the series) is about this. Mainline GnG games are action/platformers, but Demon's Crest is even in the same genre as Soul Reaver (action/adventure), albeit in 2d. The game's more cartoony, but also a much better game.

It's a lovely series that sadly has been dormant for a very long time. Demon's Crest in particular is quite stunning.

Is there any chance of him trying Demon's Crest? Gargoyle's Quest 2 was a weak episode, but DC might be more interesting to watch.
