I think he has a point even if it's blatant hyperbole/exaggeration.
I think players accept a degree of bloat in the form of 3D walking simulation that they do not in 2D games. 5th gen is also when spectacle and cutscenes began encroaching on gameplay. This all got even worse in 6th gen, and when we came out the other side, 2D games had been relegated to gimmicks and handheld games for toddlers. Only indie devs and other second-rate shops bothered making 2D games. And yet even there, some 2D games still manage to become popular and famous despite mostly shitterdevs working on them.

Haven't tried it myself, but would running an android emulator on your pc get around that? Just use a different e-mail address and credit card number?
