Agree with this guy. Also when you get a new party member, you immediately need to take him/her to Magicant to buy some equipment, it will help, but anyway I never did that. My first playthrough was disastrous in terms of overall strategy, and I still managed to go through it all and had a great time.

OP, yes, playing Mother 1 is not only the correct way to start on this trilogy, but will also help you appreciate Earthbound and Mother 3 more, since with each installment, the games got great features. I always feel sorry for those who just start with Earthbound and then go back to Mother 1... yes, it's obvious you will notice the "age" of the game if you play the second one first.
Mother 1 has an awesome setting, atmosphere and plot, and be aware that the main villain in Earthbound is the same one as in Mother 1. If you play Earthbound without having played 1 first, you won't really know what's going on, as Earthbound doesn't give off an actual backstory on the main antagonist, other than "he's just EEEVIIIIILLLLL..." he's really a more interesting character than that.

As I said, my first Mother 1 playtrhough was completely blind, and I wasn't aware about many elements that would have made the experience a lot better/more fun/less hard, although I reccommend if you're about to play Mother 1 for the first time and really want to enjoy it to the fullest, don't read the following, play the game blind and submerge yourself into it, you will enjoy it more.
