In picrel developers such as Romero bemoaned the transition into late 90s gaming for inflating the scale of projects and thus the manpower and development time and resources necessary to make product up to the public's standards.
If he has no developers, then it's difficult to make something even on the level of a Gen 6 game quality-wise, let alone would bring in the profits.
Don't know how true that is but at the time they were confident that mobile gaming would just be an easier market to go indie in.

Try Honoring the Code, it's a book of interviews with Chris Avellone, Tim Cain, Doom dude, creator of Yar's Revenge and the infamous E.T. game in it, among others. Very nice little demi-manual on game design, as well as history.
