It's an acquired taste but VIII breaks the mold in such pleasing ways

>no need to grind
>can eliminate random battles
>card game provides all items / spells you need

Sure, if you just plow straight ahead it plays like most other other JRPGs but it's a very different experience once you do a enc-none run when you only fight bosses and power up with card mods. One of my favorites

One thing that's underrated is that for being such a cinematic game it doesn't rely on pre-rendered cutscenes and uses the in-game models for all of it, which was kind of contrary to how a lot of other games were doing it, especially squaresoft.

Another director might have used slick anime cutscenes or something like that but Kojima stuck with the inexpressive models for the sake of consistency and somehow made it work. Eventually that became fairly standard and the models were good enough that it wasn't a problem anymore but it was actually a pretty significant stylistic choice at the time.
