I also find modern stuff boring, especially the infatuation with 3D, HD, and all the other baggage that goes with AAA titles and franchises.

There's a lot more interesting things going on in indie scene, homebrew scene, and of course retro-coding scene. Those guys don't have millions of dollar budgets, but they're not afraid to try different things instead of relying on advanced graphics. They make a game, if it works out then great, if not they ok just try something else. There's no huge investment of time and money, no need to play it safe and conservative to make sure enough people buy the game.

Anyway, you probably haven't played ALL the retro games yet. Instead of watching movies, you can try other old games and platforms.

This "dream-like game" in pic is Alpha Waves (aka Continuum), because only the oldest retro 3D games are interesting to me anymore. The ones that run on 8 or 16 bit machines and require a lot of creativity and careful coding and hacks to pull off. Those are a lot more interesting than just another modern game that offloads its work to latest nvidia GPU.
