Are there any good gimmick levels?

Did you try Contra? I didn't care for Megaman but I ripped through a lot of Contra (Contra, Super C, Operation C, Hard Corps, and Aliens Wars [Normal]) when I got into it. With Megaman I started a level and attempted to jump over a pit. An enemy shot out from the pit mid jump, hit me with body contact, and I fell down. Game killed my enthusiasm within a minute. Enemies are less bulky in Contra and there aren't cheap shots right out from the gate.

I also recommend the Shinobi series, Streets of Rage series, Road Rash series, and Rocket Knight Adventures.

Shinobi 3

Not quite vaporwave but really had that vibe that we would later describe as neo-90's

Shinobi surfing without waves.

Shinobi III literally improved on everything that Revenge did and than added more. Better gameplay, better graphics, better bosses, etc.
Shinobi III is just the better game. Why the hate? The level design is way more open than in Revenge.
