It probably didn't sound as generic to Japanese audiences of the mid 90s. But given that most of the character names came from Capcom USA (and the ones that are different in Japan were changed from those), it's possible that "Darkstalkers" was also the original title. I even have a picture of this officially licensed jigsaw puzzle that for some reason has the "Vampire" logo, but then has "Darkstalkers" written in katakana, implying that maybe someone messed up during last minute changes.
