So I learned something good about the bayonet attack.

I took an elevator up to this cubby in a tower, where I get face to face with an arch-vile. 7 shots go fast and I stun him each time, but if I fire the last shot to reload, he'll set me ablaze, the flames already licking me.
So I start stabbing at him with the bayonet, repeatedly, and he fidgets around, ultimately I stab and shove him out of the window, leaving me safe up there, with him scampering around down there.

The fast lunge of the bayonet can really save your bacon in tight quarters with arch-viles.
