I feel like the only way to make it worth keeping in your inventory IS to make it a proper weapon. Because otherwise the Chaingun will always replace it, because even if you gave the pistol ALL of those perks, you'd just quickly draw it and slowly plink at things in a really unsatisfying way.

I can't think of many encounters where there's only a single imp or a single zombieman for that to be a problem.

It is but that doesn't make it any less of a fucking stupid design choice. Making a weapon intentionally awful to make the other weapons better is pretty fucking inexcusable. It's one thing to make a weak weapon, but the pistol is awful all around.
Still not the worst starting weapon though, that award goes to Redneck Rampage's revolver, someone needs to be slapped for that thing.

I'm actually more offended at your post now. That pistol in RR is a fucking travesty. The worst starting weapon in any of the older FPS games I've ever played. Even Doom's dogshit pistol is useful in comparison.
The shotgun isn't great either but it sucks compared to SW's riot gun. RR doesn't have a particularly enjoyable explosive either. The grenade launcher and rocket launcher of SW are way better.

Should have given us the SMG instead of the godawful pistol. Like I get their idea was to make a weapon so fucking bad that it makes every other good in comparison but Jesus Christ not many other FPS games around that era past Doom pulled this shit.
