Quake is hardcoded to load whatever map is named "start" when you hit Singleplayer > New Game. Beyond Belief uses its own start map, so you have to load that manually; some other map sets/mods (including Arcane Dimensions) named their hub map 'start' and so you auto-load into their map instead because the contents of a mod always override the contents of the stock id0 and id1 pak files.
