What are some retro games that are punishingly difficult, but once you get good, are a blast?
Ninja Gaiden Black is a one of my favorite games ever, but I've never played any of the NES ones (despite having an NES as a kid, I'm 36). Just started playing this on the Switch because why not, it's free, and the gameplay is surprisingly similar to the Xbox game. After curssing God dozens of times I'm starting to get the timing down and it's actually a lot of fun, I find myself coming back to it again and again. It's extremely difficult, but doable, and now I'm obsessed with beating it (without using rewind or save stares).
I find it's one of the few NES games that holds up.

Are the sequels as good?

After playing Revenge of Shinobi I can't go back to this game... The game isn't hard it is merely unfair. The levels have no vertical scrolling and most of them aren't memorable. I just feel like Shinobi is the better Ninja game.

Revenge of Shinobi is way better than this game.
