It is all about what you like most. For me? Earthbound. It clicked with me as a kid and held up as an adult. I would kill for a Mother 3 mod of Earthbound only for tacking on the fun rhythm game fighting piece.

I do recommend the Mother games a whole lot. Prolly stick with Earthbound or Mother 3 tho. Mother has a fuckload of old confusing game design decisions.

Pretty cool that it grabs the arcade stuff too. Like, when I updated my MiSTer normally for the first time I saw Tower of Druaga in the update list and I've been meaning to give that a go since I saw the anime like a decade ago, but I'm too dumb for MAME. This means I can finally give it a go.

Mother 3 is great though, and it's pseudo-retro since it started as a N64 game and a lot of the game's plot remained the same. But yeah it's still not technically retro.
I agree about the "play that one" part, Mother fans are notorious for picking a favorite and disregard the others.
Mother 1 is great and should not be missed. If possible, it's better to play the series in order.

As an example of how it'll cut into your profits; I live in South Australia and recently found a place in Queensland that imports Jarritos Cola from Mexico. 24 bottles of the stuff costs $60, which equates to $2.50 a bottle. Freight to ship them 2000km to my home is $33. Now it works out to be nearly $4 a bottle.
Now scale up that to something the size of a CRT, which you're talking about shipping internationally.

The soundtrack really is special, no wonder since Keiichi Suzuki from Moonriders was involved, as he was on the first game. That said, Hirokazu Tanaka was also a key factor for the exquisite sound design and OST the game has.
Recently I've been fond of this track that plays at the beginning of the game, where you explore Onett's meteorite crater at night:

Not really all that different. In the context of Mother 3's story, Porky's past isn't all that vital to understanding the story. Yeah, there's an EB cameo at the theatre of NPC, and Porky has Ness' yo-yo framed in his room. But that's still more like fan-service than actually pivotal for the game's plot. All you need to know is that Porky is some mad child that has been time/space-travelling for probably centuries and is pretty fucked up in the head. If you happen to have played EB and know that Porky started as a normal kid in Onett who made his way up and became a villain, then all the better, you're going to enjoy his appareance in 3 more, but if not, you're still gonna understand the story.
Same happens with EB, when you encounter Giygas, all you need to know is that he's a time/space-travelling alien that is beyond fucked and probably not even in the same dimensional plane as humans anymore. If you happen to have played 1, you get more out of it because you actually see what has become of him since he left in his ship, still in his physical form and not having lost his mind yet.
