Super Mario is an Adventure game because you're going on an adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom
DOOM is a shmup because you shoot everything up
Puyo Puyo is a fighting game because the characters are fighting against each other
After Burner is a flight simulator because you're in a plane
Final Fantasy is a beat 'em up because you beat up everything you come up against
Harvest Moon is a puzzle game because figuring out optimal crop placement is a puzzle
Zelda is a roleplaying game because you play the role of a fantasy elf
Sonic is a roleplaying game because you roll around all over the place

Puyo Puyo is my favorite as well and I really like this genre of game. Puzzle Fighter is a lot if fun as well but not quite as deep so I don't ultimately hold it in as high regard.

Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack etc is probably second to puyo in my mind, dealing with and building chains is similar.

Regular Tetris is a game I played virtually every night before bed for like 15 years and I love it. But ultimately strategy wise it's quite simple and only gets challenging when there's a ton of junk in your way or is moving super fast. For that reason I almost always played on game type B level 9 and 5 high. Both super fun and gives you the biggest rocketship.

Puyo is king. Puzzle Fighter isn't as good but is also a lot of fun. Remix is much better.
