In Insomniac's case, I think I remember reading that they were out of ideas for Spyro and wanted to start over with a bipedal character. The fact that post-Insomniac Spyro games immediately picked the most obvious choice for a new gimmick (elemental breath), and did absolutely nothing interesting with it, makes me agree with their decision.
