>The TV isn't a 15 kHz set
15khz is not the only /vr/ resolution.
>Might as well play on LCD
Nope. An HDTV CRT is still a CRT and will have all the corresponding benefits in color, black levels, and response time.

I'll go ahead and explain the whole thing for >>4667896
There are a variety of reasons why a WEGA or other HDTV CRT (and in extension all HD CRTs) can be useful for retro gaming.

To start with re: 15khz. Well, plenty of PC games run in arbitrary resolutions up to 1920x1080.

Additionally, many people like to render their retro games at higher resolutions via emulation (for reasons we'll not get into, but accept that there are people who -do- do it). Notably people do this with PlayStation and Dreamcast games. But these people may still want the benefits of a CRT. An HDTV CRT is a good display for this sort of project. Not all HDTV CRTs are 16:9, btw.

Sony WEGA units are late stage CRTs that include a lot of advancements in CRT technology and they generally have excellent color reproduction, geometry, and a service mode that allows an amazing level of control over the final image. This is very appealing to me as a CRT and /vr/ nerd. If it's a 16:9 screen showing a 4:3 image there is also a small benefit of the centered image being sharper than it would be on a true 4:3 set due to the way CRTs naturally have softer focus in the corners.

If one is interested in utilizing RetroArch's shader functions then good results can be had with a HDTV CRT. 1920x1080i resolution gives you some space to work with to put a shader on that will make for an image that compares very favorably to the PVM/BVM photos that are posted here. Sadly, I don't have access to my own HDTVs anymore to showcase this myself. But the benefit over the PVM/BVM are the cheapness and commonness of HDTVs and the greater screen size in some cases.

If you happen to come across a 480p native EDTV you've pretty much got a 31khz arcade monitor on your hands. (cont)

That particular crt in the vid is a KV-34XBR960, Sony's highest end consumer hd crt, and yes it is better than many flatscreens. Until about 10 years ago it was considered the industry standard for tv picture quality, contemporary reviews gushed over it and thanks to its widescreen form factor and HDMI support it's still an ideal display for modern HD games and video.

Cool. Would you go for the 40" XBR or pic related? It's a KD-30XS955, there's a new (!) one in a local shop where I live.
