I posted a recommendation of this in the shmup thread but has anyone here played Landmaker? It's a unique and quirky puzzle game by taito. You have to combine tiles in this shuffleboard-style arena to create larger and larger houses/buildings, which you can destroy to send blocks over to the CPU or opponent's screen. It's pretty hectic and like any vs puzzle game the match can either be 30s or 75s long without you realizing you did anything different. But I recommend it!

I picked it up for dirt cheap on the PS1 (it has a great solo mode for chill play sessions - no clock pressure, just limited moves per board).

not him but some good ones that I enjoy, that are a little outside your standard puyo mold, are Money Puzzle Exchanger and Land Maker. The latter is strange and unique and has a very chill solo mode on PS1 whereas the arcade mode is pure chaos and quick thinking.

It's not vs. but Cleopatra Fortune is also fun and extremely hectic, though its rules and block patterns may be a little too esoteric for someone getting into puzzlers.

then don't get it! You have to judge what your money and time is worth. When I look at my most played shmups on steam, they range from 20, to 40, to 80 hours.
