How are my "Smartphone & Controller" bros in these threads doing? I'm still really enjoying my setup, it's crazy how good a lower end Samsung from early 2019 can be for emulation, all I need for is it my cheap controller and its good to go, I also love how such a cheap controller, which I'll admit I didn't trust much, has lasted me almost a year of weekly use, its a life saver in trips and all.

I do use my smartphone actually, attached to a telescopic controller to give it more of a Switch form factor, and it works well for me. However, while this is a solution, just like using an XBOX controller like you mentioned, that isn't really what most people here want. In general people don't own multiple smartphones, and playing on your main smartphone for messages and calls is quite a bother depending on how many of those you get in a day, also many people just prefer to have a distinction over their devices that are for work and the ones for play. Also, a controller on a smartphone that's already quite big might be a handheld, but it certainly isn't pocketable, you'll need a bag to take it with you to places, while a lot of these handhelds are pocketable instead.

Also, just addressing your laptop question, it's simple really, a handheld's way smaller and a lot easier to hold and carry with you, also easier to play on your bed, while a laptop would have to sit on your lap for that to be viable, but a handheld just fits in your hands and allow for you to be in a more comfortable position at all times while you play. I think that's all there is to say about this...

No need to get disencouraged about getting a bit of a bad reception, I think it's fine if you want to post on these threads, but you need to get that coming into the thread and acting as if the whole point of it for most is baffling/not valid makes it so they take it personally, they'll get bothered by you, you have to be more respectful about it, and not confront people on liking stuff.

In general a lot of us smartphone users in these threads get a lot of hate, some of it is quite unfair in my eyes, but a lot of it comes from the classic "Just use your phone" posts we still get.

It's the main flaw of this method, but while it looks quite off when staring at a full image like this, it's something you don't really notice all that much when you're focused and playing, which is what matters most. I'd still recommend a more traditional handheld to people, but if you already have an old Android smartphone around that you want to give new life to, it's a good method.

I'm still rocking my Galaxy M30 and MOCUTE-060 setup that I've been using for a few months now, it's so comfortable to play on my bed when I feel too tired to do anything else, or before going to sleep, just pick it up, load up a ROM on RetroArch and suddently I'm playing, and can keep playing it for hours, or minutes, whatever I prefer, it's just a flexible setup that reminds me of older consoles, when turning it on to play, and then turning it off aswell, felt so instant and quick, snappy. I only go for it at home though, this setup is around 25cm long, and even if you take the smartphone and its controller separately, both are big, I think using a smartphone alone, or a dedicated handheld, is an ideal choice for playing outside... but if you want to play inside and nothing else, it's a good choice.
