In sonic 2 Tails' arms are flesh colored in the special stages

So, I never actually beat Sonic 2. I'm gonna play it, but I just realized something.
You can disable Tails being in the game, which would make special stages WAAAY easier, but I feel like I shouldn't because it's supposed to impose a challenge.
What should I do?

I remember the special stages being a bit too demanding, and way too disconnected from the core gameplay. The sphere planetoid ones in Sonic 3 are also absurd, but at least they're manageable without much practice, and sort of fun to play.

They should have built on the 50/50 existing/altered gameplay principle they introduced in the first Sonic: for example, something about maneuvering a gauntlet at -forced- top speed, or isolating the pinball mechanics (like in the first 8-Bit Sonic). But I'm guessing the idea was to have something impressive-looking to show on the screenshots for magazines and blurb.
