I'm just baiting, the way you worded it was funny to me. I actually had fun with 64 for probably that reason and think it is a good party game. Though I never played any of the others. It's actually in my opinion one of the reasons Mortal Kombat was so popular as well. Sure the gore and live action sprites were awesome, but it's streamlined with simple inputs so that just about anyone can choose whichever character they like and quickly be whooping butt and using all the moves. I taught my mom how to cheese my buddies with Mileena to great delight, but she couldn't begin to handle SF2.

I maintain that it was at least partly because the game is much more streamlined with simple specials that are all easy to perform and universal moves like uppercuts and sweeps that made the game accessible to a wider audience than Street Fighter.

Block being a button as opposed to back feels really weird if you're already used to fighting games, but otherwise isn't much worse.

It's only one example, but my own mother could whoop many of my friends asses and fatality them, just knowing the basics and having me teach her how to be cheap with Mileena. By contrast she could barely play SF at all. Could rarely if ever make a hadoken come out, never a dragon punch or anything more advanced.

MK was certainly popular because of the blood, but I think it's streamlined simplicity often gets overlooked.

Funny thing is, I'm dyslexic. But sometimes weird things like that just pop to me. It was the first thing I saw after clicking, I wasn't even reading the text.

I lived in the country and despite liking games never enjoyed being in arcades much, but I do have one good story.

A few of us had gone to see Mortal Kombat and after while waiting for my friends to piss I put a quarter in an MK2 machine in the lobby and in the middle of my first round some guy comes and challenges.

He I was Mileena, he takes Liu and first round I beat him perfect, mostly because it was 90% teleport kicks and roll spamming. Second round he finally hits me with a fireball and I actually stopped playing for a second and in the most indignant tone I could I muster said "you ruined my flawless!" and then spammed him to death.

But then he goes to walk away but his younger brother stops him and says "wait look!" and he watched with a big grin as Mileena did her gore fatality and the dude just glared at me the whole time.

>Not sure what you mean. Having similar inputs is what made the game so great

I believe this was a big part of original MK's success too. Even my mom could kick ass in it back in the day. Would fatality you with Mileena when she won too. By contrast she could barely do a hadoken in SF and never a dragon punch let alone SPD. MK inputs are standard and simple for everyone to grasp. It made the game accessible in a way SF never was.

She's pretty deep into Pokemon since Gold and has played about half of them, as well as a pretty crazy amount of time on Animal Crossing. Professor Layton and various puzzle/boardgame type things.

Back in the day she was surprisingly good with Mileena as well. I love my mom.

>Once you "get good" at SFII there's nothing other people can do, but MK gives you a fighting chance.

You've never watched a video of high level MK play have you? A scrub has zero chance against someone really good. It's no different from SF in that regard at all.

One of my favorite MK memories was playing a machine in a theater after the movie while waiting for my friends to piss. A guy comes up and challenges me, I destroy him the first round, but on the second he scored a hit and I looked at him with all the mock indignation I could muster and said "you ruined my flawless!"

After I won he started to storm off but his little brother said "Wait! Look!" and he scowled as I fatalitied him. I had a lot of practice of course, but that's the point. Really any fighter is going to be like that.

That is why it's been pointed out that MK's simple approach is a huge part of what made it so widely popular at the time. The moves are simple and everyone controls very similarly so you can pick any character you think looks neat and go with them.

Street Fighter is a much more complex game where you have to learn different playstyles against different opponent and well as much more varied moves. It's why it takes longer to get into, but it's also the reason people are still playing it seriously all these years later.

Mortal Kombat was like an early party game. Compared to Street Fighter it's extremely quick to pick up the basics and get playing. Nowadays it would be called "casual" but with a game like this it was a great thing, it brought a lot of people in and got them hooked on fighting games when they may have never even looked twice at SF2.

It's a little bit like Smash's popularity and ease of entry. Even my mom could kick ass at MK2 back in the day and would fatality you when she won. It was one of the first real party games and I think that's a big part of what made it so great.

I guess we just disagree then. 3 is a little more over the top in general, but I see them all as being pretty campy.

This is the perfect answer. Even my mom could play MK2 back in the day and would vore fatality any chance she got. Just get some pals and have a fucking blast.

You would be amazed how many people would play Mortal Kombat and never use the block button.

My mom mained Mileena in MK2. No joke. She would even do her fatality if she beat you, yelling "Go Mileena! Eat him up and spit out his bones!"

She's also played every Pokemon up to Black 2 and sunk over a thousand hours into the various Animal Crossings.

Never cared for Dr Mario though.
