Thankfully there are home ports. I think the presentation is different, though. I seem to recall the arcade version letting you select which world to play from a menu, whereas the console versions have an explorable rendition of Sumner's Tower.

Yes, the PS1 port was rushed, and no, it wasn't up to par with the other ports. It was nonetheless playable, and a good effort for what limited time and assets the development team had. (Six months?) Considering I got it for $5, I can't complain. It's still a part of my library today.

The PS1 version of Gauntlet Legends emulates fine in pSX(fin), and I assume ePSXe would be compatible as well. Of course, it's a rather watered down port compared to the N64 version.

There was a Gauntlet thread a little while back, but I don't think it got many replies. Let's try a general hack and slash thread instead.

Aside from Diablo and Gauntlet, what are some other great hack and slash games or series? I'm actually not that familiar with any retro series aside from the aforementioned, so I'd like to get some recommendations while I'm at it.

Gauntlet Legends and Dark Legacy had quite a bit of collecting, especially Dark Legacy (Yes, the arcade version is technically retro)

In Legends, you had to hunt down rune stones and obelisks to unlock additional realms. In Dark Legacy, you had to collect a shit-ton of crystals to unlock additional realms, but the obelisks were removed as a result.

Legends is available for arcade, N64, Dreamcast and PS1. The PS1 port was done in only six months, so it's not quite up to par with the others. I enjoyed it though.
