I don't even think is a matter of experimental, it's true that with many indie developers there is a lot of new stuff. The main points are looks and gameplay.
1. The graphics have definitely improved, yes, but take any random person not into gaming and they will hardly notice the difference between an upscaled PlayStation 2 game and a contemporary one. Starting with the PS3 you really need to nitpick.
2. Gameplay modes have been established. The gamepads did not change shape, number of buttons and configuration since the first DualShock (1997) and they are the main form of input (I know KB+M is better for many games, but that's beside the point).
3. Genres are established. As many pointed out already: FPS, TPS, etc. There haven't been a Doom, Dune or Tomb Raider equivalent in the past 15 years.
Based on this we need to decide when it took place and set the bar there for retro/not retro.

We could all just migrate 8kun. The /v/ board is so incredibly dead we would effectively have the whole thing to ourselves. They only get like 1 maybe 2 posts at the absolute max every hour over there and I think they would really appreciate the new traffic.

I think the 6th genners should take up shop in /vrpg/ as a protest. All they've managed to achieve here is pissing people off and making them way more resistant to the idea of allowing 6th gen on /vr/. Considering RPG games are allowed to be discussed outside /vrpg/ for some reason it makes their case for /v2k/ much more powerful since /vrpg/ is pointless and /v2k/ related discussion isn't allowed or wanted here and gets drowned out on /v/ and /vg/ which isn't a problem that RPG games have. Them getting their own board is the best of both worlds since they get to discuss their shit and /vr/ doesn't get flooded with GTA, Halo and Kingdom Hearts threads. If a fucking stupid and pointless board like /vrpg/ that has a subject that can be discussed outside the board is allowed to exist then /v2k/ has a pretty good chance of being created.

Nobody minds PS2 being considered retro, the real problem with this is that it when you consider Retro to be based around the passage of a certain amount of time rather than a specific and unchanging area of time it opens up 7th gen consoles and above to also be considered retro. Nobody would mind discussions of games like Sly Cooper or Golden Sun, everybody however would definitely oppose titles like Gears of War or Last of Us being discussed. It's a shame the line in the sand has to be drawn here and 6th gen left in limbo but the consequences of allowing it to be discussed are reason enough to keep it off the board.

Just use 8kuns /v/, it had an exodus recently and is a total ghostt own, it was slow as goddamn fuck before the exodus as well. It only has like 4 posts in an hour. You could hijack the entire board for 6th gen discussion and no one would stop you.

1 is a decent game with a great soundtrack.

2 is arguably one of the best handheld Mario games
