Fun fact: The video chip in the Colecovision natively outputs component video.

There was a run of custom multi-out boards so you could have component, svideo, composite and even optical+coax spdif out. Not sure where you'd get one now though.

Also there's so much space in the fuckhueg case that you can mod it to have an internal modern power supply. The whole thing can run off +5V if you replace the RAM chips with modern ones and don't need the RF out.

The Colecovision was by far the most capable 2nd gen console.

And shit, if you still wanted 2600 titles you could get the add-on module for the Coleco that let it run Atari carts natively.

>which is better? composite or s-video?

SVideo. It has more bandwidth because color (chroma) and brightness (luma) signals are separate and given their own sets of wires.

Composite is aptly named because it's a composite of the two chroma/luma signals on one wire. The signals have to share the bandwidth of that single wire and can induce some interference in each other.

RGB and component run over three wires and have even more video bandwidth than Svideo and cleaner signal separation.

RF not only puts composite video on one wire but also the audio, and on top of that it's very prone to interference because the transmission is at radio frequencies in the first place.

>Atari game mixed in

Every time.

The power supplies for these things are like gold. When a Coleco stops working it's usually because the PSU is dead and not the console.

The actual console is made of off-the-shelf parts and is easily repaired or modified.

Some people mod these things to run solely off +5V just so they can use an ordinary 5V AC adapter instead of having to obtain or worry about the original PSU.

I am both amused and a little disappointed that my component modded Colecovision and svideo modded Atari 2600 have better video clarity than my NES, but unwilling to ruin a PC10 or VS game to change that.

I'm holding out hope for that guy working on a FPGA-based PPU replacement.

I stopped putting up with stock AV on my consoles a long time ago.

That model's known as the audiophile playstation because it contains the same DSP Sony used in their super high end stereo gear at the time.

Sony had a shortage of the intended audio chips, and instead of delaying production and risking getting curb stomped by Nintendo, they used what was on hand and compatible.
