I applaud the dev that went the extra mile of faking the LoD on the "tunnel". That gag legitimately got me as a kid.

That must be a relief, given your ability to be right may rely exclusively on others being wrong.

I was 12, and it absolutely blew my mind. It was the only game I cared about for almost a year, and for a while I even thought I would never need another game because this one seemed inexhaustible. The story, stupid as it is, was spot-on for a twelve-year-old. Aesthetically,t he game's great, and the soundtrack is one of Uematsu's greatest works. There's almost no gameplay - the materia system is more like a toy than a game in that none of it is required to win, you just fuck with it for fur - but that was exactly what I needed at that age.
When Final Fantasy VIII came out, I flipped my shit. The opening cinematic alone blew my mind, and the improved graphics were of course almost too much. But I don't think I would've cared about either if not for my 1997 obsession with FFVII.
I played Parasite Eve, Xenogears, et al and hunted down Squaresoft games religiously, including Einhander and Ehrgeiz. Brave Fencer Musashi wasn't bad, but the best and most lasting result of the obsession was me playing the ps1 version of Chrono Trigger: I couldn't get into FFVI (both games sold together on two CDs), but Trigger immediately struck a chord.
I was the biggest Final Fantasy and Squaresoft fan for a while until I started discovering better games. Of course, the downside of my Final Fantasy obsession was that when I played Ocarina of Time half a decade later, it seemed to be the most open-ended and immersive game in the world for me after years of Final Fantasy and Xenogears and all that garbage.
These days my respect for Ocarina is middling and I have no respect for FFVII at all, but I still love the music from the latter as well as the aesthetics on the broadest level.

If you were to delete every cinema in ff7, could n64 run it?
would the backgrounds still suffer or something?

If I had to guess why the remake has a much cheerier tone, it's because they thought that moody tone of Advent Children and other FF7 spin-off media was a mistake.

Where I'm at now is that a lot of these games are time-wasters but I appreciate them mostly for how the art comes together. As an adult I buy paintings and hang them on the wall now, you know? I like concept art books, that sort of thing. So I appreciate things like Final Fantasy VII for having hundreds of pre-rendered screens, I like those JRPGs for depicting cool art set to nice music with a narrative framework for exploring them. At this point, I think that's their greatest strength really - the story itself is silly, the gameplay is boring and simplistically easy, and so on. Same goes for something like Ocarina of Time: the puzzles are trivial for someone in their 30s, the story is really trite children's stuff, but I still appreciate the way sound and visuals come together.

>I'm not him but I couldn't disagree more, there are plenty of examples of games of that same and previous year that objetively look way better than FFVII
In the same genre? Major RPG releases in the year before FFVII's release were Super Mario RPG, Persona 1, King's Field III, Legacy of Kain, Terranigma, and Daggerfall. Some of these were very technically impressive in their own way (Daggerfall's scale especially), but I think FFVII achieved a level of polish thanks to the prerendered backgrounds so the more janky models didn't stand out so much. It didn't have the "best graphics ever", of course something like Quake was more impressive technically, but it's just plain revisionism to say it didn't impress people back then. You can't discount the impressiveness of prerendered backgrounds, I mean a game like Riven was gorgeous and blew people away and that was all pre-rendered screens. It's very narrow-minded to single out a single facet that's comparatively poor like its untextured models and conclude it must not have impressed people in 1997.

- Great visuals aesthetically.
- Really great music.
- Combat gameplay is a toy rather than a game. No challenge at all. Just play around with buttons that launch cartoons.
- Exploration is extremely bare-bones.
- Story is cool when you're 13, laughable for an adult.
- Writing is fanfiction-grade.

In most examples the CG render is just a static background or the FMV is played as a regular video, but Final Fantasy is animated where real time 3D stuff is drawn over it. Same with Fear Effect.

In Killer Instinct the CG render is always moving and is not static

in FF7, this was used for one shot but it is so effective at using the player's imagination to give the impression of a massive metropolis, bustling with life.

Great game, really shows that early 3d has a charm to it and doesn't have to look dated. I believe a remaster came out awhile back, I should check it out.

Around the fifth generation of gaming it seems art direction became more of a focus I feel. I feel like with fifth gen developers seemed to want to make games "more" then just games. Before games really were looked at for one major thing above all, their gameplay. But here developers started doing more, story, art, and music were now getting more complex.

The prerendered backgrounds of this era really are quite nice even today. I'm neutral on FFVII myself but its prerendered backgrounds are amazing.
